The clock strikes twelve for the Doctor, and the story continues. We have the name of the actor to play the twelfth Doctor. And that actor is, drum roll please...
DAVID CAPALDI!
While most have never heard of him, Capaldi is an Oscar-winning actor and (perhaps most important of all) is a lifelong Doctor Who fan. Matt Smith will be handing over the keys to the TARDIS coming at the end of this year, and Capaldi will be taking over.
What's interesting is that Capaldi has usually played far more intense characters. Even when he's been funny, such as in In the Thick of It, he's usually flinging out expletive-laden insults. He's very intense, very powerful, and, more than likely, very much going to be helming a slightly more serious version of the series. For me, Capaldi is a great selection, and it shows that the showrunners are more interested in who's right for the part than they are in who's super-hot in pop culture. Some have said that he's too old, completely forgetting William Hartnell, Patrick Troughton, and Jon Pertwee, the original older doctors. (Though age is hardly an issue here at all, because the character is now well over 900 years old.)
Personally, I think this is exciting. Bravo BBC, for making the right choice and not going for who's trendy, or who's got the face that would excite lovesick fanboys/fangirls. As Who fans, we want two things: good stories and good actors. We don't mind bad special effects or non-Brad-Pitt-types at all. Great acting and mind-blowing ideas are sexy enough.
